Monday 03/22/10: How to get rid of the clutter!!!

Spring is here and it's time to strip off the old and grab hold of a clutter free enviornment! I always feel better when my house is clean and clutter free. These days that can be a challenge, but here are a few tips from the Feng Shui Diva, Robyn Bently to help!

"Open your eyes and look at all the stuff that's cluttering up your home. Now think about what you actually need and what you could live without like CDs you don't listen to, books you've finished, DVDs you don't watch, video games you don't play anymore, software, cameras, jewelry, clothing, collectibles, etc. You can take the things you don't use or don't really need and turn them into money to benefit the American Red Cross or other relief organizations. So even if you're strapped for cash you probably have some valuable things cluttering up your home that can be used to help disaster victims.

Clearing your clutter will help you too. After you clear your clutter, your home will feel more positive and so will you. Here are some tips to help you get started.

Make A Date With Your Clutter -- Be serious about getting rid of clutter. Set a day to start. Be reasonable with yourself about just how much you can accomplish. Give yourself a set amount of time to accomplish it.

Start Small -- A big room might be too overwhelming so start with something small, like a drawer. Take it easy and do one thing, finish it, and then do another small thing.

Organize Your Stuff -- Divide the big project of clearing clutter into smaller, more manageable clutter projects. Make a to do list and check items (2) things to sell for hurricane relief (3) gifts you'll give to others (4) garbage.

Transforming Your Clutter Into Cash -- There are a couple of ways to use your clutter for hurricane relief. You can sell your items on eBay and donate the proceeds to the American Red Cross or other relief groups. eBay has a special Giving Works program for charity listings where people can buy items that support nonprofit organizations. The items you auction will be grouped with other items that are specifically being auctioned to help charities. And shoppers can search for items that are being auctioned to help charities. But if you are unable to auction items online you can help out the old fashioned way by having a yard sale and donating the proceeds to the Red Cross or other relief organizations. You can also combine your items with friends and family and have a neighborhood, civic association or church sale.

Tuesday 03/16/10: Reading a Book cover to cover!

Over the weekend I knew that I needed to relax, and relax is exactly what I did! On Sunday I did something that I have not done since I started having children 14 years ago. I actually read a book cover to cover. Now you will understand this was not a huge book, it had large print and it was one of those easy read mystery type books, but even still I really feel like I accomplished something on Sunday. I got up, went to church, taught Sunday School, got the kids lunch, read my book and then did the whole dinner thing at the in-laws. It was a typical Sunday, but in the middle, I was able to take some time, thanks to my husband, to just sit back and read a really good book. Ahhhh. Now I am ready to take on my week!!

Friday 03/12/10: David Cook saved me!

Working out this morning I was on the treadmill. I didn't want to be on the treadmill! But, all of a sudden, David Cook started palying in my headphones. All was good. I actually wanted to work out longer, but I had to be at work.

Thursday 03/04/10: What Am I Making? Bananas Foster!

What am I making?

1 banana cut on an angle into 6 pieces

2 tbls. Fresh butter

3 tbls. Brown sugar

1 oz Rum or Brandy

8 oz. Vanilla Ice Cream

Wednesday 03/03/10: What Am I making? Creme Brule!

Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 tbsp light brown sugar, to caramelize tops of custards

Cooking Instructions

1 Heat milk in a 4-cup glass measure, uncovered, at 100% for 4 minutes.

2 Remove from oven. Whisk together eggs, sugar, and vanilla until well combined. Whisking constantly, add hot milk in a thin stream. Divide mixture evenly among four 1/2-cup ramekins.

3 Place ramekins in a shallow ceramic dish just large enough to hold them without touching. Pour water around them to a depth of 1 inch. Cook, uncovered, at 100% for 5 to 6 minutes. Do not overcook-custards will still be wet at center.

4 Remove from oven and set ramekins on a cooling rack. When completely cool, refrigerate for at least 6 hours.

5 Preheat conventional broiler.

6 Sift 1-1/2 tablespoons brown sugar over each custard, completely covering the top. Fit ramekins into a metal pan. Fill gaps between ramekins with ice and add water to a depth of 1/2 inch.

7 Broil just until sugar melts, about 4 minutes. Watch carefully to avoid burning. Remove from oven and rub each caramel crust with ice for 30 seconds, to harden it.

To serve 6. Use 2 cups milk, 4 eggs, 4-1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons vanilla, and 1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp brown sugar. Heat milk in a 4-cup glass measure for 5 minutes; cook custards for 6 minutes.

To serve 8. Double quantities of milk, eggs, and granulated sugar; use 1 tbsp vanilla and 3/4 cup brown sugar. Heat milk in an 8-cup glass measure for 7 minutes; cook custards for 8 minutes.

Thursday 02/25/10:Unbreakable Umbrella

I found this very neat "weapon" used for self defense. It's called the Unbreakable Umbrella. You can find it here: www.real-self-defense.com. Check it out and enjoy! Possibly a must have for women.

Wednesday 02/17/10: Moms/Daughters help with body image!

Good afternoon. I was reading an article today that really hit home for me. It was talking about our teenage daughters, their body image and how we as moms still have unresolved body image issues and are unable to help them. Our society too is so contradictory that we can't cope with eating and body image. So, I have included a link to this article for you. There's some great stuff in there. Enjoy!

Tuesday 02/16/10: My Career/Life Coach!

I had a great morning! I had the opportunity to talk with my friend, Heather, who is a career and life coach. Her name is Heather Hightower and she and I first met at church when we were co-music directors. She is a wonderful talent and a very intelligent lady. She recently informed me that she had a passion to give career and goal setting advice to young career minded people like herself and to try and help them straighten their path just a bit. I was amazed at how focused Heather was and how she was able to articulate ways for me to reach the goals that I have even though I am a few years beyond that "young career minded" age. It is still important that we continue to make goals and work towards them. It keeps up young. Heathers angle is that she helps you to slimline your goals, and like she did for me today, she helps you to decide what is really real and how you can reach that goal without a lot of extra work. You can talk to Heather too. Schedule an appointment https://my.timedriver.com/SMJ56. Her homepage is here http://www.heatherhightower.com and her preview call for young professionals this Thursday is here http://www.heatherhightower.com/Site_2/previewcalldowhaturgoodat.html.

Monday 02/08/10: Project Love this Friday the 12th! We need your help!

Good afternoon! Hope you survived the crazy weekend. Weather forecast says that we will likely see more tomorrow. However, I'm putting my order in now for the 60's over the rest of the week. How about you? I also want to talk to you about helping out with Project Love. I will be helping the Hope Community Center deliver cupcakes this friday the 12th at 1pm. What we need are cupcakes and people to help deliver. We will take the cupcakes to the soup kitchen at First Baptist Church on Park St. If you think you can help please go to the Project Love link on our website and sign up to help. I'll be there to help all along the way!

Wednesday 01/27/10: Check up ladies! Don't Wait!

Hey there! I'm on my soap box today so please forgive me ahead of time, but I'm only doing it because I care. Can I just say that I am one of those people that rarely gets sick. I have very little physically wrong with me, I'm pretty much just a normal gal. Knowing that about myself I am also really bad about going to the doctor when there is something wrong with me or just going to the doctor for regular care. So back in the summer I decided that it was time to get my annual pap that I hadn't had in about 4 or 5 years. Well, guess what? It was abnormal. I had NEVER had that before and I was a little worried, but my fears were soon put to rest that my abnormality wasn't that bad. So 4 months later another pap just to make sure. It was even worse. Oh my goodness, I was thinking...what have I done to myself? Waiting so long...well, long story short, doctor did a colposcope and he said that everything looked just fine. So next step is to re-pap in 4 months just to be sure. The moral of this story is that cervical cancer is relatively undetectable. My doctor told me that there are no real symptoms for cervical cancer. I am NOT a doctor, so what do I know other than I encourage you to take care of yourself and go get that pap AND continue to get them every year or as recommended by your doctor because most types of cervical cancer can be treated if they are found in time, but many can't be treated if found too late. Don't take the chance!!!

Wednesday 01/20/10: Discontinued!

So, I have done something that I am very proud of. I have been trying for probably 3 years to completely get rid of sugary soft drinks in my diet, and finally after I started working out at Gold's Gym...for some reason the battle is over and I am now onto diet drinks. Now, not all diet drinks are created equal and it took me trying several different drinks to find a few that I could actually tolerate. One of those drinks was ultra violet diet mountain dew! That stuff had just the right amount of caffein to keep me going and it did NOT taste like diet, so I was happy. However, after I bought two 12 packs of it a few months ago I have not been able to find it again. Needless to say that was very distressing to me so I asked one of the Pepsi guys the other day and he said that the ultra violet diet mountain dew has been discontinued(did I mention that it was purple?). Now why do they do that? They rope you in, get you hooked and then they take it away. Is there any benefit to that? Ilove Pepsi products so this is not a complaint against any particular soft drink company, it is just a complaint in general and now that I've blogged about it I feel a little better.:) So any suggestions for me on replacements? I love diet sierra mist w/cranberry, but there is no caffein and mama needs her caffein! Email me at sherry@z95.net.

Thursday 01/14/10: My sons birthday gift/Food Cravings

My son, cameron, had a birthday yesterday and my brother, Paul, decided that he was old enough to have his very own bow and arrow! Oh my. Of course he asked me first and my husband and I agreed. I am so glad that we agreed because I have never seen my son light up like that before. He wants to be a hunter now and Uncle Paul has agreed to take him when deer season comes back in. Cameron even got a bullseye while trying it out last night. I will never get any rest...it's official.

Ever wonder why you crave a certain food? Ever wonder if it's because you're lacking something in your diet? I have a craving for salty things and lately it has been crazy. So, I did some research to see if I just like salt or if maybe I could be lacking something. Here is an article that is interesting if you would like to check it out.

Wednesday 01/13/10: Happy B-day Cameron! Gold's Gym 12 Week Challenge Over!

First I want to say Happy Birthday to my son, Cameron. Happy Birthday sweetheart...I love you! I also want to update you on the Gold's Gym 12 week challenge that I have been a prt of for the past 12 weeks. I made it to the end. I won't be winning any awards, but I did lose 5 pounds (and that includes gaining two over the holidays) lost inches, espcially in that place that women tend to lose inches the most? I lost 4 inches there. Geez. My clothes fit better and I just feel better. I worked with a wonderful trainer at Gold's, Teresa Harris. If you are looking for some great inspiration and support as you move toward your goals, go look her up. She is the BEST! Teresa gave me skills that I can use for the rest of my life. I am looking forward to continuing my quest to better my life one day at a time and you can do it too.

Thursday 01/07/10: Coupons for the Troops!

You ladies are the best around. I put out a message on the air last month that we were out of coupons and guess what? I am no longer out of coupons. As a matter of fact I have them coming out of my ears. So THANK YOU!!! This has been successful because of you and I can't say thank you enough for that. I sent one box of coupons out on Monday and I have 3 more sitting here waiting to go out as soon as I address them. I could fill more boxes, but I have run out of time for now, so they will have to wait for a couple of weeks. I want to thank Mike and Heidi Brown, Mary Martin of Insight Settlement Services in Palmyra, The Seigmans, Zoe, Carol Baber and her friends at Walton Middle School, Linda Candia and Grace and Glory Lutheran Church and the ladies of my church, Beaver Dam Baptist Church.  I know there are many more, but most of you just bring the coupons by w/no names, so you know who you are. Keep 'em coming.

Wednesday 01/06/10: New years resolutions! Don't make them yet!

At least that's what John Tesh and his experts say! According to Tesh, make those resolutions in the first 2 weeks of January and you will likely fail. Worth a shot, huh? I noticed how full the gym has been this week. My trainer worked me out some kind of fierce last week. She got this new workout book for Christmas and decided that I would be her test subject. I was feeling it for days after that, but the cool thing is that it was a really good workout that I needed for the start of the year to get all the gunk out of my system from the holidays. I encourage you to workout this year not just to lose pounds, but to feel better. I am loving it now after 3 and 1/2 months. It's a major stress reliever for me too. However, I was getting discouraged over the holidays because I wasn't making it to the gym as much, but today is a new day and we're in a new year, so I won't get discouraged, I will keep going. What New years resolutions have you made? I would love to hear about them.

Thursday 12/10/09: Window cleaner and calcium and lime! Help!

Okay, I've tried many cleaners and I've not tried certain cleaners because I don't want to spend the money if I don't know whether they will work or not. So, I am asking you to help. What will clean windows without smears and what will clean a bathroom that has water w/calcium and lime? I am officially at a loss. If you have a proven method or a proven chemical that will work, I would love to hear about it! Email me at Sherry@literockz951.com or call me at 220-2395. Thanks!

Wednesday 12/09/09: Games NOT to get the Kids for Christmas!

Ten Video Games To Take Off Your Kid's Christmas List!
When it comes to video games there are still plenty of wholesome sports, arcade and music-themed entertainment out there. But parents beware. There are also plenty of games with over-the-top characters, graphics, foul language, violence, gore and sex that are attracting teenagers and even younger players. So the Web Site for Common Sense Media has offered a list of ten cool games kids may want, but parents should avoid. Here's the list: Assassin's Creed II, Borderlands, Brutal Legend, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Dead Space: Extraction, Dragon Age: Origins, Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony, Demon's Souls, Left 4 Dead 2, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. The web site offers a detailed account of what's in each of these games but suffice it to say all are rated M for Mature Audiences and contain things you probably don't want your kids exposed to. (New York Times)

Here is the website for Common Sense Media for a check of age appropriate games for the kids.

Monday 12/07/09: Candy for the Holidays!!!

Over the weekend I was inspired to try my hand at making peppermint bark. I recently tried some at Red Rocker Candy in Troy and oh my that stuff was good. So, my kids and I tried a recipie that I found online. Here it is along with several others in case you would like to try your hand at making easy candy.

Wednesday 12/02/09: Working out...I'm sore!

I have to be honest...with the holiday last week I didn't get to the gym much last week or this week. So for the first time in a week I made it to Gold's Gym this morning and I was supposed to do my cardio, but my trainer ended up having time to work w/me and oh boy did she work with me. I really felt not being there for a whole week. I will try to never do that again. If you're in the same boat, don't give up...get back to the gym and keep going. It is so worth it. If you're not a member anywhere give Gold's Gym a try. They're running a toy drive promotion, so check them out. Have a great day and stay dry!

Tuesday 12/01/09: Calculate your cars age in "Human years"!

It's December already! Today we're going to talk about calculating your cars age in human years. It's goofy, but it's fun. Here is the formula if you want to try it.

***Take the mileage on the cars odometer and divide it by the model year of the car***

That's it. The result is your cars age if it were a person. My van is 65 years old and my husbands car is 55 even though my van is newer. Hmmm. Interesting. What do you get for yours?

Thursday 11/12/09: The New Walmart!

Hey there. I had the day off yesterday, it was my husbands B-day...Happy B-day Chuck! It was also Veterans Day and the grand opening of the brand spankin' new Walmart at Zion's Crossroads. We have been waiting for that Walmart for a long time, so my husband wanted to go there since we were all off. It was a madhouse! I saw Jay Lopez there.:) He was broadcasting live. It is a beautiful space w/lots of stuff. Just what we all want. I think we waited in line for 30 minutes just to buy a few items. Maybe not the best choice to go yesterday, but oh well, we saw a ton of people that we knew and we played around w/this really neat Colgate robot that welcomed us to the store and had a wise guy running it. It was fun and I look forward to making many more trips there. I guess that officially makes us a pretty boring couple, but I'll take it.:)

Monday 11/09/09: Shear Power Fun!!!

Well, today was the day for my Shear Power Makeover. It was so much fun. I even had my eyebrows waxed! I've never done that before. I look so much more alert now.:) Who knew? Tuesday 11/03/09: How "Germ-Free" are you?

Here is a little test that you can take to see how ready you are for the flu season. Enjoy!

GERM ALERT

Swine Flu season is here. Take this quiz to see how "germ-free" you are:

  • You use public restrooms. - 3 points
  • You wash you hands afterwards + 3 points
  • You open the door with your bare hand - 3 points (That is where the germs are)
  • You open the door with the paper towel you dried with then toss it. +3 points
  • Given the choice of a row of stalls you take the farthest from the door. - 3 points (that is the germiest)
  • You use the stall closest to the door. +3 points (That is the cleanest)
  • You wash your hands for at least 10 seconds under running water. -3 points
  • You wash you hands for at least 20 seconds. +3 points (minimum time under running water to kill germs)
  • You use hot water while washing your hands. -3! Points (Hot water will cause you to wash for a shorter duration, and only boiling water kills germs)
  • Showering after a workout at the gym you wear flips flops or shower shoes. +3 points
  • You do not wear shower shoes or flip flops. -3 points (Bad germs there... bad)
  • You friend brings over his new dog and he gives you a big lick / kiss. -3 points (The myth of the dogs tongue being cleaner than ours is well. A myth!)
  • You fend off the dogs kiss and settle for a pat on the head. +3 points (Statistically the dogs head has the least germs. It is the part he can't lick!)

Your score means?

If you scored in the negative numbers you should head to the closest decontamination shower immediately!

If you scored in the positive numbers you are fairly clean and worthy of a hug! Uh but make sure that person scored in the positive numbers first!

Thursday 10/22/09: Social Security and Plato's Closet

I was reading an article this morning about Social Security and maximizing your benefits. This struck me today because my parents are getting to the point in life where they are trying to decide when to retire, and it won't be long. I had no idea that if you waited until after age 66, you could actually get a bonus in more money in your social security check. I thought this information from Kiplinger's Retirement Report could be helpful. Here ya go.

http://www.kiplinger.com/features/archives/2009/09/krr_boost_your_social_security_benefits.html

Now for Plato's Closet. My daughter has always been a fan of this place. She needed pants for the winter and we went there last week. Moms and Dads, if you've never tried Plato's Closet, you should try it at least once. We got 3 pair of jeans for under $30. Two pair were marked 50% off and they were the ones that she wanted. They have womens and mens sizes too. It is so worth it. The clothes are in great shape and they are what your teens want.

One box of coupons has made it's way out the door today. They went to a troop in Yokota, Japan. I will send another box out tomorrow to Germany. I want to thank everyone that contributed to the coupons for troops like Cheryl, Brenda Steigman, Brenda Dickerson, Carol Baber, Mary Martin, Dorothy Ayers and the ladies of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. Wednesday 10/14/09: Tomatoes have carbs?

So I'm at Gold's this morning working out w/my trainer, Teresa, and on my way out we are talking about food and how I can do better w/my choices. She asked me to send her a food log b/c she says that I might be eating foods that are good for me, but not good at night. She then told me that tomatoes and cucumbers on your salad are not a good thing at night if you're trying to lose weight b/c they are full of carbs. WHAT?? She said, instead, put chicken and cheese and egg on your salad at night. Save the tomatoes and cucumbers for lunch. Unbelieveable! I am learning so much at Gold's Gym!

Tuesday 10/13/09: Gold's Gym and Daughtry

Well, finally the UNCUT version of the Daughtry interview is on our website, Just click on the picture of Daughtry at the top and you can hear it for yourself. So, I was at Gold's Gym last night for the 12 week challenge kick off, and I had to get my before picture taken along w/all my measurements and weight. That was a lot of fun.:) After all of that was done I started talking to my friend, Heather, who is a trainer at Gold's Gym. Heather and I have known each other for a long time and she used to be in the same boat as me. She's had multiple children, a sit down job and just a lot of mommy things to do. I asked her how she got so fit and she told me that she had to get a grip on her eating and that she actually started to work out only one day a week. BUT, with her dedication and hard work, she eventually(over the course of one year) lost the weight and now she is an accomplished trainer/class leader at Gold's Gym. It was very encouraging to hear her story b/c I was beginning to think that I was a lost cause. Heather is a great inspiration both in her life and at Gold's Gym. If you decide to take the plunge, go seek out Heather.

Monday 10/12/09: Daughtry!!!!!

Hey, today is Daughtry day. Jay Lopez and myself, we're talking w/Chris Daughtry today at 3:30. You can hear part of the interview live on the station today at 3:30 then later we'll post the whole 14 minute long interview on the website. You also have a chance to win tickets to the November 20 show at JPJ today after the interview. So...keep listening. We'll have your chance all week to win tickets!

Monday 10/05/09: Getting back in the swing

Happy Monday! Got my flu shot today and my arm is killing me. Here's hoping that when I head back to Gold's Gym tomorrow, my trainer doesn't completely knock me out. I haven't exercised in 3 days and I am itching to get back into the swing. I love the way I feel these days. I have much more energy and my clothes are fitting better. That is something that I haven't experienced in a while. So props to working out! Thursday 10/01/09: What Am I Making?

Instructions for Peanut Butter Cookies

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Oven mitts
  • Cooling Racks
  • Groceries
  • Measuring cups
  • Cookie sheets
  • Mixing Spoons
  • Hand Mixers
  • Mixing bowls
  1. Step 1

Use a wooden spoon or electric mixer to beat the butter and peanut butter until combined, about 30 seconds.

  2. Step 2

Add the sugars, baking soda and powder, and beat until combined.

  3. Step 3

Add the vanilla and the egg and beat until combined.

  4. Step 4

Stir in the flour until incorporated. The dough will become thick and difficult to work at this point; you may want to chill it for an hour or so until it's easier to work with.

  5. Step 5

    Heat oven to 350 degrees.

  6. Step 6

Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place them a few inches apart on cookie sheets.

  7. Step 7

Butter the tines of a large fork and use it to press the cookies flat. Make a design of perpendicular lines with the fork. Re-butter the fork as necessary. You can also dip the buttered fork into granulated sugar before pressing; some of the sugar will then stick to the cookies.

  8. Step 8

Bake for 10 minutes or until just starting to brown around the edges.

  9. Step 9

Remove from the cookie sheet to cool.

Tuesday: 09/29/09 Mozart

Fuuny little story about the late great Mozart. There is a place in Austria called Raschala that is celebrating their one claim to fame; Mozart tinkled there. They have a stone set up at the place where Mozart relieved himself during a carriage ride back in 1787. The so called "Pinklestein" or "piddle stone" is now the focul point of a music festival. They ask visitors not to relive the moment and piddle on the stone. They want to show respect for Mozart.

Friday: 09/25/09 Gold's Gym

Unbelievable! September is almost over. Is that even possible? Well, it's Friday and I worked out this morning before work at Gold's. It was a good workout but I forgot my shower shoes and had to shower in my socks. It's really not a good look, nor does it feel good, but you do what you have to do. Any other suggestions? I would love to hear them. My body is finally out of "shock" from working out. When I first started, I was all shaky and hungry when I was done. Now I'm just hungry. However, Gold's Gym helped me with that too and helped me w/my diet to make sure I was getting a workout all the way around. My trainer sat down with me a few weeks ago and she just modified what I already eat, so it made it not such a shock to my system. I tell ya, it's a slow process. Unless you have the will power of a maniac, it will take you time to get back into shape, but my doctor says that is actually a good thing. He says small changes over a long period of time are ideal. If you're in the same boat, good luck and keep me updated on your progress and what you do that works for you. Have a great weekend!

Thursday: 09/10/09 Noise Cancelling Headphones for Kids

I talked yesterday about how our kids are losing their hearing way too early due to listening to music too loudly for too long.  The main thing that was suggested by an audiologist in Boston was noise cancelling headphones or earbuds. I have been doing some research to try and find some options for us as parents, and this is what I have come up with. There is a company called Head Phones Factory. You can find them at www.headphonesfactory.com. They have many options for noise cancelling earbuds or headphones. Also, Skull Candy is a really big one for the kids. You can find them at www.skullcandy.com. Then, if you want to spend a lot of money to get the best, you should go to http://reviews.cnet.com/best-noise-cancelling-headphones/. They did a review of all the companies and came up with these choices. www.ebay.com and www.amazon.com also have a collection of noise cancelling headphones to choose from. Good luck!

Tuesday: 09/08/09 Shampoo and Horses!

Hey there! Hope you had a great Labor day weekend. We woke up to horses in our front yard. We live in the country, so it's not unusual to see horses in someone elses yard, but not by our front porch. It was great. They even left us a gift before they left.:) So, I'm looking for a great shampoo...something that will give me lift and bounce, but won't break the bank. I sound like a commercial. So, I thought I would ask you if you had a shampoo that you just couldn't live w/out. That's what I'm going for. Or if you have two poos that you rotate. Let me know. Thanks!

Tuesday: 08/04/09 Help with the hair!

Okay, so no one has anything to say about the new hairdue thing? What if we had a contest on the station and you got to pick what was done to me and you got to enter for a free makeover yourself? How does that sound? Let me know what you think because I am trying to make that happen and I need your help. Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated. More info is right below on yesterdays blog entry.

Monday: 08/03/09 I need a new Hairdue

Happy Monday, yes it's here again for the 32nd time this year. Unbelievable; it's already August! I'm writing today to contemplate a new hairdue. I have had relatively the same style for the past forever, and I'm letting my hair grow right now, but I want to do something different and I dare say radical. I'm not the radical type when it comes to my hair. I just wanna look good. However, it is time for a change and I have no clue what to do. I might even want some color, but I'm not sure what to do there either b/c my hair is very dark. So, I need some ideas. What have you done that you would consider a nice change for you? Know anyone great at what they do? What's your suggestion/story? I would love to hear from you.

Friday: 07/17/09 Summer is almost over?

Happy Friday! I haven't blogged in a while, and it seems like the summer has come and gone and I don't have a lot to show for it. Do you ever feel like time is getting away from you and you just want to get some of it back? The kids go back to school in 3 weeks!!!! I have to schedule doctors appointments, eye exams, dental appointments. One of my kids needs to have an ear, nose and throat operation and I haven't made the appointment yet. I have been thinking in my head that we neeed to schedule her for a summer operation since January, so that she can recover over the summer, but now I'm thinking, "what summer?" It's gone! Isn't it still January? I'm so confused and so overwhelmed with stuff to do. When are we going to stop doing so much stuff that we just have time to live and enjoy what we have? And now it's time for back to school shopping. Can I just skip it this year? I want another month w/my kids. How do you feel about it? Has the summer eluded you this year? I'm done complaining now. Have a great weekend, and take some time to really enjoy the things that matter.

Monday: 07/06/09 Rip Currents

Happy Monday! It's great to be back from vacation, and back with you. I was talking today about my two sons and I getting caught up in a rip current at the Outer Banks on July 4th. It was terrifying when you realize that you're in it and that you have to react. I want to pass along the most valuable information that a person could have(besides praying) if caught in a rip current...swim sideways. Don't try to fight the current, swim sideways. It does work, that's what we did. It was the only thing that worked. I want to thank my nephew, Kyle, who helped me get my 8 year old to safety. I also want to pass along a link that I found online that actually talks about being able to recognize a rip current before you go in the water. I will be checking this list several times before we jump in next time. Hope this helps, and please always accompany your children in the water. My son and I were only right beyond the shore when all of this happened. Had I not been in the water with him I doubt that anyone else would have recognized what was happening and the lifeguard would have to rescue him. The article says that rip currents are not something to fear, but you should be aware of how to get out of them when they happen to you. Be safe.

Tuesday: 06/16/09 Blue Star Families of Central VA

Hey there! Just got finished talking with Jacqui Cecalupo, the president of Blue Star Families of Cen VA. They are an organization here in C'ville that got together because they all had kids in the service. They decided to send care packages to the troops overseas and to write them notes so that they wouldn't feel like they were alone. Jacqui and the rest of the group have a packing day this Thursday, June 18th at 6:30, and could use your help. There is a whole list of items that they will be sending on their website, and you can drop off donations of money or items at any Union Bank in the area.  For more information on the Blue Star Families of Cen VA, check them out here: www.bsfcv.avenue.org

Friday: 06/12/09 Going Digital

Well, today is the day that the TV world changes from analog to digital. If you are hooked up to cable or a dish, then you're fine and don't need to do anything. However, if you are NOT hooked up to either of those, you will need a converter box. The government is issuing coupons for the converter boxes. You can find all of the information and a troubleshooting hotline at this link.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31326181/ns/technology_and_science-tech_and_gadgets/?ns=technology_and_science-tech_and_gadgets

Good luck!

Wednesday: 6/10/09 Mailing more coupons

Hey there! It's Wednesday and I wanted to update you on the coupon mailing for the month. Yesterday I sent off a large box of coupons to a naval base in Rota, Spain. Again, I want to thank all of our loyal listeners for their help in this project. Mary Martin, Josaphine Lamb, Lori Densky and Dorothy Ayers as well as the women of Beaver Dam Baptist Church in Troy. There are others who contribute as well, and since I don't know your names all I can say is "thanks." Keep 'em coming, we'll mail off another large box next month. Also, since next month we celebrate July 4th, please feel free to include a handwritten note to our service guys and gals or email me w/a special note and I will include it in the box. We will try to get the box sent off early. As always, let me know if you have questions or suggestions for our Coupons for the Troops.

Les Sinclair and I were talking about a quiz from 1933 called "What You Should Be." It was posted on Twitter by the Charlottesville Woman Magazine, thanks Wendy. I wanted to share it with you. You'll find some funny stuff and realize that we're not so different today than in 1933. Check it out. There are 2 seperate links for the first part and the second part. Enjoy!

Thursday: 05/21/09 Help finding a house

Hey there! Almost the weekend! A long weekend too. I hope you get some time off to rest. Won't it be nice? Well, today I have a plea for a friend of mine. She has to be out of her house by May 31st, and she is having a very difficult time finding a place to live. She wants to live in the country, east of town, if possible. She would like a house and enough room for her pets. Most houses east of town are over $1000 a month. She is a single woman. I don't have a clue how to help her other than to ask you for help too. I figure the more people that know, the better her chances are to get a place by June 1. Any thoughts, ideas, help? Please email me at sherry@literockZ951.com. Have a great Memorial Day Weekend, and be sure to pause and say a prayer for our troops currently in service and for our veterans who still deal with the reality of war every day. Thanks to all who have risked so much for each of us.

Tuesday: 05/05/09 Cinco de Mayo!

Happy Tuesday and Cinco de Mayo! Hope you're staying dry. When will this rain ever stop! I wanted to update you on the coupon mailing. I sent out 3 Priority Mail boxes yesterday to 3 different Air Force troops. One was in Incirlik, Turkey, one in Osan, Korea and the last one in Fairford, UK. We still have coupons left over! I will get another box together towards the end of the month for another troop, and then of course I'm still collecting for the last part of May. So keep 'em coming, and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Have a great Tuesday!

Hello! Just wanted to touch base and let you know that we have 2 boxes worth of coupons this month for our overseas troops. That is just wonderful! I want to thank Mary Martin from Insight Settlement Services in Palmyra, Dorothy Ayers of Charlottesville and Lori Densky of Varian. All three ladies contributed to those 2 boxes of coupons. Thank you so much! I also want to answer a question that one of my loyal listeners asked about the coupons. She asked where our overseas troops could possibly use these coupons. She said that in the Middle East the troops have mess halls and no grocery stores. My answer to that question is simply this. Unfortunately, these coupons are not for our Middle East troops. She is right about them not being able to use them. However, we have overseas troops in Germany and Asia mostly that can benefit from this service. We send the coupons directly to the commissaries. If you would like a complete list of the troops that can benefit from this service, check out the whole list here: http://www.grocerysavingtips.com/expiredgrocerycoupons.htm
If you know of any troops that could use some coupon help, please let me know and we will make it a point to add them to the list. We are planning to send the latest gathering of coupons next Thursday, April 30. Again, thank you to everyone for helping with this community service for the men and women that protect our rights everyday.

Good Friday: 04/10/09

Happy Good Friday! Geez, what a crazy day traffic-wise! If you didn't hear me reporting today, the Wachovia bank at 29N and Airport Road was robbed today. I don't want to dwell on that though, I promised to post 2 Easter Egg Hunts that are happening in Troy tomorrow. One is at Beaver Dam Baptist Church on 250E in Troy at 10am. They are between the Beaver Dam Market and Cosner Brothers on 250E. Children of all ages are welcome. Also at Crossroads Community Church(gray house) in Troy they are having a big event from 11-2 tomorrow. Here are directions. They are close to Zions Crossroads.

The gray house is on the corner of Poindexter and 250 East.  After you go thru the stoplight at Zion Crossroads stay on 250 East and go approx. 1 to 2 miles.
The gray house is on the left and we’ll be set up in the field beside the house.  The Zion Crossroads Fire Dept. is located on Poindexter Road.

Hope whatever you do, it's a great weekend. Happy Easter!

Thursday: 04/09/09

Hey there, it's Thursday again! It's a beautiful day. I hope you're able to enjoy it. Easter is this weekend and town is going to be nuts. If you need anything for Easter day, my advice is to get it today because after today, town will be crazy. Well, on Monday I talked about the 5 things that you should never say to your wife. It was pretty funny and had several people call in and tell me what their husbands do to them. One lady said that after she took 5 minutes to explain something to her husband he just turns around and says, "huh?" Drives her crazy. Another lady said that her husband blames being a man on everytihg that he does that she doesn't like. Here is the list of the 5 things that a man should never say to his wife:

"5 Things You Should Never Say to a Woman:"
  • Forbidden Phrase #1: "Relax." Understand, a woman screaming and carrying on in anger or frustration or panic thinks that her response is 100 percent appropriate. You're denying that there's a reason to be upset.
  • Forbidden Phrase #2: "I love you." (During a fight) In real life, a woman hears "I love you" most often at that point in a fight when she desperately wants to get to the heart of the issue.
  • Forbidden Phrase #3: "It's up to you." (a.k.a. "Whatever you want to do is fine with me.")
  • Forbidden Phrase #4: "You knew I was this way when you married me."
  • Forbidden Phrase #5: (Nothing) Say... Anything. Throw the ball back. Throw it badly. Even risk throwing a wild pitch and letting her take an extra base. But keep your head in the game.
A friend of mine who heard me talking about this emailed me a link to youtube. It is very cute. A comedian is singing about the things you never say to your wife. Check it out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iK2OakMoW_c

If you can't get the link, you can go to youtube.com and search for Tim Hawkens and the things you don't say to your wife.

Thursday: 04/02/09

Well, a day late and a dollar short on my promise to deliver my "One Step at a Time in 2009." It has been a while since I've updated you on my goals for the entire year. March didn't see much progress from me at all. I almost didn't exercise the entire month and I certainly didn't eat well. Things got stressful last month. But, I will not let that get me down. Typically I would hang it up and assume that I wasn't going to make it happen. However, I have gotten back on the wagon and I plan to keep going. If you are in the same boat, fishing off the same dock or riding the same train as I am, please keep going or try something different, but don't give up. Be happy for 2009 and try it one step at a time. I'm here for ya!

Tuesday: 03/31/09  "Man Out" the minivan

Guys, do you hate driving the minivan? My husband hates it for sure. He has his big man truck and that's the way he likes it. Well, just for you today, I found a video on MSN, that will maybe help out a little. I still like the radical changes to the minivan, but this will do to. Check out the video. It's funny.

http://theguysmanual.msn.com/?Category=catID3&Id=v3&source=msn&gt1=25050#

Ladies, tomorrow I'm going to update you on my "One step at a time in 2009". Progress has been slim for the month of March. Tune in tomorrow for that on my blog.

Wednesday 03/18/09: The New Puppy

Hey there, it's a beautiful Wednesday! I hope you're enjoying the day. The weekend is looking good too, but Thursday is probably going to be rainy. That's okay, because we do need it, so we'll look on the bright side of the rainy day. Well, the family got a puppy last night. My parents breed Bichon Frise puppies and they gave one to my daughter for her birthday. Normally I don't want a puppy, I want a dog because they are already broken in. We do have a black lab, Angel, already. She is an older Lab. Well, I fell in love with this puppy the second I saw him. We named him TuMolly b/c his parents are Turk and Molly. I am asking listeners for their advice on raising TuMolly b/c we haven't had a puppy in a very long time. Any help would be appreciated. Just email me at staylor@literockZ951.com. Have a great day!

Thursday: 02/26/09

Good afternoon! It's Thursday, almost the weekend. Hope you're hanging in there. I haven't updated you on my "One Step at a time in 2009" in a while. So, I thought today would be a good day for that. Actually, I'm still doing everything that I promised to do, and if you don't know what that is, here's a recap...2 glasses of water a day, 10 minutes of exercise and packing my lunch everyday. My goal was to lose weight and save money gradually and to make these new ventures habits. So, in that respect, I would definitely say that has been a success. I have dropped 3 pounds in the past 2 months. However, I was hoping that I would have lost more by now, but the fact that these things are now second nature to me and that was really my goal. The payoff would be weight loss and money saved. So, if you're in my boat and you're not getting to your goal as quickly as you hoped. Keep at it, think of healthy ways to get there. I'm open to suggestions too. I'm here for you!

51% of all women wish their mothers had talked to them more often about beauty and body image when growing up.
79% of all women agree that there is a need to start talking to girls early in life about what real beauty is.
72% hope they have not passed on feelings of self-doubt or insecurity to their daughters.
67% of all women avoid certain activities due to feeling bad about their looks.

Tuesday:02/10/09

Okay, so it has been a little while since I updated you on my New years resolutions. So here goes. As of today I have officially lost 3 pounds. Now I know this isn't much, but the fact is that even thought I haven't made crazy drastic changes to lose weight, I am still losing weight. There has to be a reason for that. Last month I lost 2 pounds and this month so far I have added one to that. My only resolves so far for January were to exercise 5 minutes a day and pack my lunch everyday for work. In february I added upping the exercise to 10 minutes and packing my lunch everyday and drinking 2 glasses of water everyday. This is what I like to call taking it "one step at a time in 2009." I have had days when I felt that I wouldn't be able to make it or the progress was going so slow that I just wanted to lose all of the weight now. The problem with both of those things is that it took several years to get in this shape, you don't lose it in a month and expect to be able to keep it off. So, I continue to plug along and keep praying that I will have the patience to make this work. More on the show today with proposal stories and inexpensive ways to make Valentines Day meaningful. I hope you tune in!

Monday: 02/09/09

Hey there! It's Monday! Woo Hoo! Last week was nuts with the John Tesh concert, and so much going on that I didn't have the chance to update my blog. So, here we are post John Tesh, and what a great time we had! My husband was even saying how much fun he had at the concert, and I wasn't sure if that was going to happen or not. I hope you had a great weekend, no matter what you did. The weather was wonderful and even though I failed to exercise on Saturday, and was feeling like I had let myself down in other ways, like eating the wrong things, etc. I had to tell myself that everyday is a new day and just because I didn't do well over the weekend, doesn't mean that I can't continue doing well on Monday. In the past, I would have a bad day and decide that I had ruined it and never get back on track. I'm not going to do that this time. Maybe you feel that same way. It's winter, the weather is up and down and it's easy to get discouraged. It's also okay to get discouraged. Just don't stay that way for more than a day. Get back on the horse and keep on gettin' up! You are the only one person responsible for you! I'm here for you too. If you're feeling like you'll never be able to reach your goal, email me (
sherry@literockZ951.com)  or call me(434-220-2336 or 220-2395) and I will be happy to encourage you. The weather is nice again today. I hope that you're able to enjoy it even if it's only a few minutes.

I found some Valentines ideas online at
www.theromantic.com that cost you nothing to next to nothing. Check it out. I will talk about more of them tomorrow on the show at 6:20p.

Monday: 02/02/09

Happy Monday!(Grumble, grumble) I hope you're surviving the aftermath of the weekend. I did nothing right this weekend, but that is behind me now so I must carry on. I started my 10 minutes of exercise, packing lunch and 2 glasses of water a day today. So far so good on all fronts. I also talked about kids and video games on the show today. If you would like more info on that, here is the link to the site where I got some of the info. Hope it helps!

Friday: 01/30/09---Happy Birthday, Morgan! I love you!

Well, hard to beleive, but January is over and it's time for me to add something to my New years Resolutions. They shouldn't end just because January does. I have given this some thought and based on input that I have gotten from listeners and friends I am resolving, for February, to drink 2 glasses of water a day. I will add this resolution in with upping my 5 minutes of exercise to 10 minutes and packing my lunch everyday. I was also told by Linda yesterday that her family saves for vacation by packing their lunch for work and not eating out one night a week. I like it. So, to recap, my resolutions starting on Monday, Feb 2nd are this: Exercise 10 minutes a day, pack my lunch for work everyday and drink at least 2 glasses of water a day or 1 bottled water. I can do it. I need your help though. You have to keep me honest. Are you still doing your resolutions? Hang in there. The longer you have them the easier it is to sway and say that you don't need it anymore, or it's not making enough of a difference, so you let it go. If it's making any difference at all it's better than going back to the old bad habits. Keep it up! I'm rooting for you.:) Have a great weekend!

Wednesday: 01/28/09

Happy Wednesday! Thankfully the majority of the bad weather is behind us, and the weekend looks like it's going to be bearable. Are you going through the winter blues like I am? Not really sure why you're in a bad mood? That's me right now. Thankfully I am still sticking to my New years resolutions despite the winter blahs. I have lost 2 1/2 pounds so far. That's just about a pound a week. It might sound like small potatos, but there are 52 weeks in a year and if I lose a pound a week, that's a whole lot of pounds by the time Christmas gets here. I guess I could always go back to the old way and gain a pound a month, which would put me 12 pounds heavier by the end of the year. I think I like this way better, and to be honest I'm really not changing much at all. Just to recap, my resolutions were to committ to exercise 5 minutes a day and pack my lunch everyday for work. I have done both of those things in January, and had little problem doing them. Because they are doable resolutions, I have had more success than ever. I'm already thinking about what I'll add for next month. I will keep both of these resolutions, but I will add something to it for February. What should it be? Have any suggestions for me? What are you going to add for February? Have you had any success so far w/your resolutions?

(Glamour)Dying for Oreos or chips? Your body may be trying to tell you something about your diet, says Keri Glassman, R.D. Tune in and avoid packing on the pounds when you crave:

Salty or greasy foods--It could mean that you're slightly dehydrated. "Salt holds water in" says Glassman. "Your body may be trying to hang onto the fluids it's got." Aim for eight glasses of water a day.
Candy or chocolate--It could mean you need protein. Without its slow releasing energy, your body will try to get a quick fix to boost blood sugar. Try a cup of yogurt, it has 24% of your daily protein total.
Bread or pasta--It could mean you don't eat enough. Starches are already partially broken down, so your body knows carbs will give it energy fast. Be sure to eat at least 1200 calories a day.

Monday: 01/26/09

The winter doldrums are setting in and I am so ready for Spring. Am I alone on that? It's not that I mind having another 3 months to wear big clothes and be able to lose my weight gradually, but I want my cake and eat it too. That's just human nature. Why is it that we're never happy with where we are, what we have and what is right in front of our face? I don't know, again, human nature I guess. I also think it's human nature to want to survive too. I talked about one form of survival today on the show...money. We have so much stuff these days. According to MSN it's time to start thinking like Grandma and Grandpa when it comes to money and have a cash-based mindset. I agree. I'm not totally there, but it is something to work towards. Here is what I found from MSN...switching to a cash-based mindset means "learning to think and spend based on how much money you actually have." That's how grandma did it. Basically, she didn't buy anything she didn't have cash money for. She did without or she saved the money and bought it when she had the money in her hand. A hard lesson that pays 100 fold in the long run. Other little tips MSN had, save your lose change, don't eat out, comparison shop for everything and don't buy Christmas on the credit card. That's probably the hardest one b/c we don't want to leave anyone out, but that mentality is bankrupting our society. If you want more info on ways to start thinking "cash-based" go to MSN.com. Have any great ideas on the subject? Let me know!

Thursday: 01/22/09

Today we're not going to talk weight or resolutions. We're going to talk beauty. I found some terrific tips from Cosmo today. They are beauty tip for a budget and they really are helpful. So today we're just going to focus on being beautiful. Here are the tips...enjoy!

Tips to keep you looking beautiful on a budget- Thanks to Cosmo.com

Exfoliate with sweetener.
"You don't have to spend money on pricey store-bought scrubs. Mix brown sugar and honey into a paste to buff your body smooth."
"An apple-cider vinegar ($1.29 at the grocery store) rinse works like clarifying shampoo and leaves your hair with great shine."

"When a French mani chips, you can save money and time by touching up with White-Out instead of going back to the salon."

“Johnson’s Baby Shampoo with the No More Tears formula is a great, gentle way to take off your eye makeup. A big bottle costs less and lasts much longer than tiny bottles of actual eye-makeup remover.” —

My trick is to buy a slightly darker tint than you'd normally wear for your foundation or self-tanner and then mix it with an affordable moisturizer to extend its life. It'll give you a sheer glow and you won't run out as fast."

When you get to the bottom of your scent and it won't spray out anymore, pour it into your body wash or an unscented moisturizer to get more use out of it."

“Cinnamon is the active ingredient in many expensive lip plumpers — cinnamon oil, which you can get at natural-food stores, is a lot cheaper and does the same thing.”

Most women only need to wash their hair every other day. Not only does this save on shampoo, but it also keeps your hair healthier since overwashing can dry it out. Pat baby powder on your roots to absorb any oil in between sessions."

You probably have Pepto-Bismol in your medicine cabinet, so you might as well get an extra use out of it. Smooth a layer of the liquid on your face like a mask, and rinse off after it dries. It works like a salicylic acid to tighten your skin and reduce redness."

Use regular olive oil to get skin supersoft. Put a few drops on a cotton ball, and dab on flaky spots, avoiding any breakout zones. Then steam your face over a hot bowl of water to help it sink in."

When I'm tired of a lipstick shade, I melt a few old ones together. Just cut off the stubs, pop them in the microwave, and pour into a little tin. Rub it on like lip balm

Instead of facials every month, put Bioré strips all over your face. They pull out all the gunk from your pores

Wednesday: 01/21/09

Today is Wednesday, and while I did have a soft drink this morning, I am accounting it to having a troubled tummy. That's okay, right?:) I weighed myself this morning and I think I lost a pound, but our scales numbers are so close together that it's sometimes hard to tell. I guess I should spring for a better scale, but what is a number anyway, right? It's just a number. What I really long for is just to feel better about my body and about how I feel in general. So far the exercising has really helped w/how I feel. I miss it if I don't do it now, which is why I chose to do my resolutions the way I did. My friend Leslie has already lost 8 pounds and she said that she feels better too. So how are you doing on your resolutions? According to reports, this is about the time that people fall off the resolution wagon. Hang in there, keep it up. My suggestion for staying with it would be to buy those jeans that you love in the size that you want to be and hang them up somewhere that you will see them everyday. It will keep you motivated. we spend most of the summer at the lake, pool or beach, so I am thinking about getting into that cute bathing suit in that special size. It's different for everyone, so do what works for you. Let me know how it goes too!

Monday: 01/19/09

It's Monday and boy it really feels like it too.:( I did 2 big no, no's yesterday, fast food and soda. I did get some great advice from several people last week regarding my soft drink dilemm; Loyal listeners, Patricia Snoddy, Tina McCarthy and Leslie Cosner emailed me to tell me that trying to quit is tough, but drinking more water really helps. It also really makes me have to use the bathroom a lot. They also mentioned those little water mixes that you see everywhere now. I also realize what a real problem this is for so many people. Who knew? As I write this I just want to run to the breakroom and buy a Pepsi. Does that make me a bad person?:) On another note that really lifted my day, Cub Scout Pack 141 from C'ville just came into the studio to take a tour and they were so cute. I had them talking on the air and after we were done one of the boys asked if they were getting paid. I thought I would fall over. What a funny kid. Anyway, that was a nice break on a Monday. As far as my resolutions go, I am great. I am having no trouble packing my lunch or exercising at least 5 minutes a day. I think I picked winners for January, however February is another story.

I talked about panic attacks on Friday and some tips to help you in different situations. I said that I would post the tips on my blog. I'm hoping that they will be helpful to you or someone that you know who suffers from panic attacks, and I do mean suffer...
When you start panicking, your mind races-which can make you even more nervous. These techniques can help you get control thanks to Reid Wilson, PhD.

In your office: Count files or books on a shelf for at least one minute
On the street: Focus on picking out all the yellow or red cars for one minute
At home or anywhere:Breath deeply and picture the air filling your upper and lower lungs. Slowly exhale and say the word "relax" under your breath. Let your muscles go limp. Picture yourself holding this position for 10 seconds before repeating it at least 3 times
.

Thursday: 01/15/09

So the hard part about losing only a 1/2 pound is that it can come and go very easily, and today it has. I have the 1/2 pound back. Now I will remind you and me that I didn't resolve to lose any weight this month, so I shouldn't be suprised. I am just trying to use the month of January to make some changes to my daily routine so that they will become habits. So far so good on that. I have exercised everyday and I have packed my lunch everyday this month so far. So, my resolutuions are good for now. I am thinking about February already. After I finish this month successfully, I want to add something else to it. I thought originally that I would try to quit drinking soft drinks, but I thought it might be more doable if I attempt to drink at least 2 glasses of water a day. Any thoughts on that? I could really use some help on this one b/c it is very tough for me.

Wednesday: 01/14/09

Okay, the quandry for the day...does anyone have any useful tips on how to break a softdrink addiction? I am over it. It is going to be my February goal to quit the soft drinks, but I'm not sure that I can since I have tried so many times and failed. I always end up tired and feeling deprived. Any help? I could really use some. Okay, so now that the bad news is out of the way, I think I lost 1/2 pound so far! Yeah! Do you know how long it has been since I have seen the scale go in a backward position? Trust me, it has been a very, very long time. I am still exercising, but a little more than the required 5 minutes. I am also still packing my usual for lunch. It seems to be working. So, needless to say I am happy so far w/my goals for the month. I actually think these things will stick w/me for the long run. Yeah! So, my friend Leslie who is also a loyal listener of the station has already lost 7 pounds! Whoo hoo! Go Leslie! She is also packing and exercising every day, so it can work.

On another note you may have heard me talk about PACEM(thanks Wendy Edwards!), a group in C'ville that helps the homeless when it's really cold outside. Well, I wanted to post the info on my blog in case you know anyone that might need a warm bed w/the really cold weather that's coming up. Or if you want to volunteer check them out on the web at pacemshelter.org or call them at 434-465-1392. Have a great day and stay warm!

Happy Birthday, Cameron! One of my little guys has a birthday today. He's 8. No worries about birthday cake, we took care of that over the weekend, and we had a lot left over. I didn't even dive into it like I normally would. Is there anyone else other than me that has no willpower whatsoever? I like to know that I'm not alone in my pain.:) I have realized over the past few months that I have been eating like a kid my entire life. I sometimes would have Doritos for dinner followed up by leftover birthday cake. What adult eats like that? I have been doing that forever, and even though that's not a meal w/a lot of food, think of the calories I was ingesting. Okay, I'm just rambling today, but I have a bad habit of rambling. As far as the new resolutions, I'm still making it happen. I exercised today for 15 minutes on the Gazelle and packed leftover spaghetti. Probably not the best choice in the world, but I did pack. And just to give you a little tip that seems to be working for me, I heard that if you eat protein at breakfast, you will stay full longer. I didn't beleive it, but I have been eating a protein bar at breakfast every morning and I'm telling you, it does work. Be sure to get one that has at least 20g of protein and no more than 200 calories, or it may not work as well. So how is your resolution going today? Need help? Let me know.

Yikes, the weekend is over and boy did I blow it! I mean my goals are mostly for the work week, but that doesn't mean that I can do whatever I want on the weekend. I think I did though. We had a birthday party for my son yesterday and he wanted pizza and cake for his party, unfortunately so did I. I'll spare you the details, lets just say that I ate more than I should of several different foods that were not very good for me. Okay, but it's Monday and here we go again. I forgot to weigh myself today to give u the update, but my thoughts are doubt about losing any poundage after the 1st week. That's okay though, because I'm already getting used to exercising and eating in during the week. That's a good thing for me. I have noticed that the $12 bucks in my wallet is still there today after now being there since  before last week. That never happens! How was your weekend? How did you do? I have some interetsing New Years resolutions on the show today. They aren't mine, but they're good and they back up the whole, "One step at a time in 2009." I really think it works! BTW: I did pack today and I exercised this morning for 25 minutes. Yes!!!

Friday: 01/09/09

I am so excited! I got something new yesterday.  It doesn't take much to make me happy, which makes my husbands job easier.:) When I got home last night my loving husband was putting my Christmas present together. I ordered one of those Gazelle machines, you know, from Tony Little? Now I know what you're thinking, well, maybe I don't know what you're thinking, but I was thinking that I was crazy for getting it b/c it just looks so silly. Well, I've got the news for you on that machine. I love it! I'm not endorsing this product. It's not for everyone, but I like it and it will help me w/my exercise goals for the new year. You can use any kind of machine or walking shoes or dancing shoes to get you to your ideal size and weight. You can even do yoga which requires no shoes at all. I do that a lot of times for my back. Anyway, I'm rambling today. I exercised today more than my required amount, but I was trying out the new machine. With that said, my thighs and feet are screaming at me b/c they aren't used to the abuse. I think I was a little too eager this morning, but I like it! It is getting me more motivated to shed the pounds. I don't know how long that will last though, but that's why I made my goals doable this time around. I exercised 30 minutes today, but I only had to do 5. With that said, I also packed my lunch today. I was back to the PB and honey sandwich and the chips w/orange and water. So boring, but I did it for one whole week straight. How are you doing? I'm psyched to keep it up. I have been emailing my friend and loyal listener, Leslie, who is also working on the same goals. She is doing good so far and has even lost 5 pounds. You go girl! Please email at
sherry@literockZ951.com or call me at 220-2395 and let me know how you're doing. Send me some encouragement, I'll send you some too. We can do it together! Have a great weekend!

Thursday: 01/08/09

It's finally getting close to the end of the week and you know, I would like to say that I've struggled with my goals, but because I made them doable, I really haven't struggled that much to keep them. I've already done better this year than any year before. The idea isn't to struggle though, it's to make it positive and possible. Do you remember that old country gospel song from the 70's called "One Day at a Time"? That's what I think of. You just have to take your goals one day at a time and not stress out about the rest. Wanna know the cuisine for today? Thanks to my mother-in-law we actually had leftovers last night. We ate at her house and she cooks for an army.
I brought ham, macaroni and cheese and an orange for a snack. No exercise yet today. I will do that when I get home tonight.

Wednesday 01/07/09

Here we are in the middle of the week and all is well. Success almost for an entire week. You have to understand, I'm not very good at this b/c I really have to think  about what I'm doing even to just exercise 5 minutes a day and pack my lunch everyday. These are things that I don't typically do, but I want that to change, so I have to do them for a month to make them a habit. Soooo, so far so good. I'm getting adventurous in my lunch choices I actually switched it up a little today. Instead of a peanut butter and honey sandwich, I  packed just a peanut butter sandwich. I know, I'm too much. Along w/that I had an orange and a small bag of baked chips. I did the Cha Cha slide again today b/c it's easy and gives me the 5 minute work out that I'm looking for. I'm jonesing for some Chinese food though. I haven't had any in about a month or so and I really want some today. Nothing in my plan says that I can't have the Chinese food, but I can't have it for lunch at work b/c that's not the deal, so I'm going to be happy w/the peanut butter for now. I might have to start mixing up the lunch choices since doing the same thing everyday might cause me to slip. So what's up with you? Fill me in!

Tuesday: 01/06/09

Day 3, and still going. I packed my lunch again today. You will find that I don't deviate much in my food choices. I'm pretty basic in my likes and dislikes. I packed another honey and PB,  peeled apple,  cereal in a bag and chips. Hmmm, imagine that, the same as yesterday. I did about 50 sit-ups this morning before work. I haven't done those in a long time, but all is well, my stomach isn't convulsing from all that strength training. You know what's great though? I actually feel more energized during the day just from that little bit of exercise. What have you found from yours? Are you doing the same thing that I'm doing or are you doing something different? What are you doing and how is it going?

Monday: 01/05/09

Well, so far so good.  I have been hanging tough with my New Years resolution now for 2 whole work days and I've made it! Whew.:) I danced the Cha Cha Slide with my kids this morning, which is about 6 minutes long,  before work and I packed my lunch too. I brought a peanut butter and honey sandwich, peeled apple, cheese doodles and some cereal in a baggie in case I needed a snack later. That's it. No big diet, no major workout plan. Can you imagine if I tried to really start something major when I have't worked out in over a year? I would quit, I would never make it. I had to learn that about myself. I think that's the key, knowing yourself and what you can handle. So, how did you do today?

Friday: 01/02/09

Here's me trying to make a New years resolution stick for the first time ever. How are you doing so far? Have you made one? More than one? I've made just one resolution, but it has several parts. My resolution is to make a significant change in my life for 2009. Boy, that's a loaded resolution. I am taking one month at a time to do this, and I am not beating myself up if I fail, because, lets face it, failing is way easier than succeeding. So, lets do this together and see if we can make a go of it. I have resolved for January to exercise 5 minutes a day everyday and to pack my lunch everyday this month. Packing my lunch has a two fold advantage. I can save money by packing and eating in everyday at work keeps me from eating fast food. So, here we go!
